Position

A MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MOVEMENT

HYPOTHESIS:

Cyclists are safer when riding in the middle of the lane.

  • They are more visible.

  • They can prevent close passes.

  • They can maintain priority at junctions.

  • They can overtake and turn right more easily.

  • They are away from the gutter, car doors, and pedestrians.

Cyclists should always try to ride in the middle of the lane, and only pull over to the left when it is safe to allow those behind to pass.

Beware that crossings, junctions, narrow roads, and busy traffic are all situations where it might be unsafe to be overtaken.
